SRI Screening Research Process

Before investing in a company, CGF goes through a screening process to ensure that the company being invested in is truly a Socially Responsible business.

The process starts with the portfolio manager submitting a list of companies, and the Research Unit selects companies from the list that appear in the CGF Universe of Shares database. Once these companies are identified, Unity makes contact with the management and shopstewards organizing in the company, and sends them questionnaires to facilitate in the information gathering stage of the process.

Information is then gathered using the questionnaires that have been filled in with additional information, along with CGF reports, company annual reports, company websites, and other publications such as business journals and newspapers.

Using this information, a draft report is written up. This report is followed up with interviews that are held with management, shopstewards and workers.

Finally, a complete report is written up, and the company is scored, after which completed reports are presented to Unity Incorporated’s Research and Development Committee for approval or rejection, in which important issues are highlighted, reasons for scoring given, and any recommendations explained. Thereafter, the Research and Development Committee sends those recommendations to the Board of Directors for endorsement.
